Trace of the Bamboo Henge

The Trace of the Bamboo Henge is a model experiment of public art in Hsinchu City. There are gates in the north, east, south, and west of Hsinchu City respectively. In between them, there are walls connecting the gates to protect the people in the city. Outside the gate, there is also a castle with eight gates, around which bamboo is grown. Therefore, people called Hsinchu 「Chu Chang.」 With the 「bamboo and city」 as major images, Nicholas, Bella, and Pan Chia-cheng Studio designed this 「Trace of Bamboo Henge.」 Basically, the Trace of Bamboo Henge is the re-presentation of the castle, with the public art demonstration base as major site. However, there is no wall in their 「city,」 in which the people can walk freely. They may even take a rest anywhere they like.

How to connect the images of the old city and bamboo? Regarding representing the old castle of Hsinchu City as major concept, the artists created urban sculptures, which contains 16 stone engravings in bamboo shape, symbolizing 「Hsinchu.」 These stone bamboos are placed around a circle with the diameter of 35 meters, symbolizing the outer rim of the castle. Moreover, they can be used as an outdoor theatre as well in mild seasons. As the axis of the circle is pointing towards the old Hsinchu Castle, bamboo is grown along the path linking the east and west ends. During the northeasterly monsoon and southwesterly monsoon, they are a shield from the wind as well.
